Day 10

Awaken Us: 40 Days to Fast & Pray – Day 10

Ephesians 5:19-20 says that those who are filled with the Spirit are to “speak to one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making music from your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ .”  The Church was to be a singing Church.  Today, we still sing.  But some of us, on Sundays — only during our worship services.  Whether we sing to the accompaniment of a praise band or organ, we’re good for at least 2 or three songs… maybe a choir or a special music selection.

But Church is over on time, and many of us leave our psalms, hymns and spiritual songs behind, in the hymnal in the pew.  I think of that wonderful, old song sung by many, but the voice I hear in my head is that of Ethyl Waters, “His Eye is on the Sparrow.”  The part of the song that grips my heart says “I sing because I’m happy.  I sing because I’m free.  For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.”  I’m happy. I’m free. And He watches me, too.  That is reason to sing.

How  about you?  Do you have something to sing about?  I understand that the Christians in Cairo  who are experiencing a strong move of God in their midst are singing songs of praise in the streets, and in prayer meetings that last for hours… sometimes all night or all day.  They are drawing a crowd.  They are drawing converts.  Jesus did say, “If I be lifted up I will draw all men unto me”?  Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs are one way to lift him up – and that happens automatically when our hearts are revived.  This season of the year, leading up to Christmas, opens up great opportunities for sharing Him when we carry a song in our hearts.  Lift him up, because truly, “Joy to the world. The Lord is come. Let earth receive her King.”
