Day 7

Awaken Us: 40 Days to Fast & Pray – Day 7

On this “Day 7” of this unique season of fasting and prayer, I am reminded once again of the Prophet Jeremiah’s words when he wrote, “To whom can I speak and give warning? Their ears are closed so they cannot hear. The word of the Lord is offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it.” Jer. 6:10

As I read this passage, I am reminded that we are no different in our flesh than God’s people were at the time of Jeremiah. We still long for things like “man’s approval,” physical comfort, safety, and “success.”  But, we actually have as much or more at stake now than God’s people did back in 600 B.C.  And because we, as believers in Jesus Christ, now have the Holy Spirit living within us, we are even more accountable to God for our actions than at that time.

Jeremiah and Ezekiel were big on accountability. In fact, they were both known as the “prophets of individual responsibility.”  But, though they both were strong advocates of righteousness, they saw God’s great mercy and covenant faithfulness as triumphant over the consequences of sin!  In fact, Jeremiah had such compassion, and wept so deeply for God’s people, he became known as the “weeping prophet”!

As Jeremiah did, may we first humble ourselves and sit before God’s throne to listen to what He is saying at this critical time in our nation’s history.  And secondly, let us cry out to God on behalf of those who are not listening, for God’s mercy on all of us and the beautiful land that we love.  I believe our time is very short, and we have much to gain and lose!  May God speak to each of our hearts as to how to pray, and may He give us the will to pray with the same compassion as Jeremiah… with anguish of spirit (see 4:19, 9:1, 23:9).
