Day 17

Awaken Us: 40 Days to Fast & Pray – Day 17

“They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was desecrated by their blood.”  Psalm 106:38
“Keep all my decrees and laws and follow them, so that the land where I am bringing you to live may not vomit you out.”  Leviticus 20:22
“Do not pollute the land where you are.  Bloodshed pollutes the land….”  Numbers 35:33a

These verses and many others in the Bible show us that land can actually be contaminated by sin.  But it may not be immediately visible to the naked eye.  While we were in Kiev, Ukraine a few years ago, Terry and I visited the Chernobyl Museum where the nuclear explosion and massive radioactive fallout took place in 1986.  To this day the land around the facility is uninhabitable, but it looks like any other piece of land.

In America, our very own land has been polluted by our sins, perhaps not in the same way as Chernobyl, but in a spiritual dimension.  I believe that at the top of our nation’s list is the shedding of innocent blood through the practice of abortion.  May we, this day, repent corporately for this egregious sin and for the curse it has brought on our land.

Are you aware that 9 of the worst hurricanes in U.S. history have happened since 9/11? Did you know that the 10 worst natural disasters we have ever had in the United States happened just during this year? It seems as though we may have forgotten the reasons why, as stated in the scriptures so clearly multiplied times. Or do some of us just not believe what the Bible teaches us about the consequences of sin? When God forgives us of our sins, He doesn’t promise that we won’t experience its consequences on this earth – though He is so gracious and merciful when we humble ourselves and repent.

What about our other corporate sins?  We need a cleansing from national sins of greed, materialism, racism, and so many more… and mostly, a neglect of our loving Father, who has so blessed us for so many centuries.  Please pray this day for a cleansing through the “river that flows from the throne of God.” As we fast and pray in repentance, God will wash away our sins with His glory and presence once again.  And perhaps he will even remove our sin’s earthly consequences too. God have mercy on all of us as we seek Him!
