Day 25

Awaken Us: 40 Days to Fast & Pray – Day 25

“For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.”  Hab. 2:14

This verse is a great promise and something we can pray will take place in the church of America in 2012.  The “glory of the Lord” is one of those mysteries in the scriptures — it can’t be fully defined; we don’t have the language to do so.  But throughout the scriptures this phrase is used whenever “God showed up,” so to speak.

The glory of the Lord was known by those that walked the dusty desert with Moses for 40 years.  It was known by those large worshipping crowds that dedicated Solomon’s Temple.  But, lest we think that the glory of the Lord would only be known to large gatherings of people, God’s glory was revealed to a handful of shepherds watching sheep late at night on the outskirts of Bethlehem.

“An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord’.” Luke 2:9-11

It’s interesting that they responded by being afraid.  That is often the response when God shows up.  When Jonathan Edwards preached his sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” — which ignited the first Great Awakening in the 18th century — the response of the congregation was fear.  They were given a supernatural understanding that they were found wanting in the eyes of the Almighty.

Pray that our churches will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord; that Christians — across the country — will be “revived” in their passion for Jesus, and that the lost will be “awakened” to new life in Christ.  May we all humble ourselves before our Creator and King this season.
