Day 28

Awaken Us: 40 Days to Fast & Pray – Day 28

Read and meditate on Psalm 1:1-2; Joshua 1:8; Psalm 63:5-6, 143:5, 119:48, 78, and 148

In our busy lives the art of meditating on God’s Word has seemly gone by the wayside.  Over the next few days I would like us to consider again the importance of this spiritual discipline.  Meditation, in the proper sense, is not the throwing of the mind into neutral and accepting anything that comes along.  This is certain to open the door to the enemy who is waiting to take advantage of the slightest human encouragement.  In the biblical sense, meditation has several implications.

One word for meditate in the Old Testament means “to mutter” or “to muse.” (Psalm 1:1-1; Joshua 1:8; Psalm 143:5) The picture here is that of sub-vocal review as if to whisper to ourselves.  It has the quality of recounting and calling to remembrance. In Psalm 119, there’s another Hebrew word which enriches the meaning of meditation.  The word means to “bow down” in the sense of giving attention, respect, and worship (Psalm 119:48, 78, 148).  We will look at some encouragements from the New Testament next time.

Psalm 119:148 “My eyes stay open through the watches of the night that I may meditate on your promises. “

I am committed to pray for Revival in my own life, my marriage, my family, our church, our city, our state, and our country.
